For as long as I can remember I’ve had a serious love for wool coats. I started my collection at a young age and this long black coat was one of the founding members. My love for coats may not come as a surprise, but the fact that I sewed this number may be a little shocking. Growing up I loved to sew, it was one of my favorite hobbies. I loved the creativity and the fact that I could make something amazing out of a simple piece of fabric. My high school sewing teacher was one of my favorite people as she allowed our small class to have full reign on projects. This coat is one of the many beautiful creations that stemmed from her continuous encouragement. When I designed the pattern for this coat, I knew I wanted it to be classy and timeless with a hint of playfulness; when I came across this beautiful silk fabric, I knew it was absolutely perfect for the lining! Today when I wear my coat I’m happy it’s still a wonderful piece, eight years after I made it.

I was lucky enough to make a friend when we were taking photos!
Dress: H&M (similar, love this one too) | Coat: My own design (similar)
Heels: Aldo (similar) | Necklace: XXI (similar) | Bracelet: J.Crew
The nice thing about creating your own clothes is that they are the perfect fit. I’m sure you have problems finding the right length of coat. This is amazing. Good Job! PS I love the lining.
It was nice being able to design something that fit me perfectly but I usually don’t struggle too much with the length of coats, it’s mainly the sleeve length. That’s one of the reasons why I love J.Crew so much, their coats are all available in tall as are their pants so it’s a great fit! The sleeves on my J.Crew coat are the perfect length, which means I’m even more addicted now! xo
You are so pretty, Jen! I love those black heels. I really need to invest in a basic black pair like this!
Alyssa, you’re too kind! Those black heels were a great find this fall; I was looking for a black pump that was a little different than the usual and I fell in love with these because of the asymmetrical cut on them! They totally reminded me of the Alice + Olivia Dina pumps but at half the price! xo
What!? You made this coat!? That is so amazing, it looks perfect on you! And I love that lace dress. You look so gorgeous!
xo, Yi-chia
Always Maylee
Hahaha yea I made it, hard to believe right
I love the style and I’m so glad that it’s quite classic so I can get a lot of use out of it! The dress was another great find; I was looking for a dress for a work party a couple summers ago and happened upon this pretty number at H&M one day! I was beyond thrilled…especially because it’s lace lol! xo
Wow! You look so gorgeous! Love the different lengths in this!
Thanks so much Rachel!! I agree, the coat is quite long (it’s the longest one I own) so makes for an interesting look when paired with a shorter dress. xo
DYING over the overcoat. It’s super chic and perfect for the cooler temps!
xx
M
Aww thank you Maria, that means so much to me! You’re absolutely right, it’s perfect for the cooler weather because it’s so long it feels almost like a blanket! xo
I can’t believe you made this! It looks so great and those shoes are wonderful!

With Luck
I remember when I finished it, I was a little shocked too! To be honest, it wasn’t too difficult because the coat is made up of eight long panels. The lining was the most difficult part because silk is extremely hard to sew and if you made a mistake the sewing needle actually puts holes in the delicate fabric so you can’t unstitch what you’ve done because the fabric would be filled with little holes. Thankfully I didn’t make too many mistakes
You look SO pretty in that dress, and your hair looks amazing!!

The Other Side of Gray
Thank you so much Annie, you’re so sweet! I love that dress…but then again that’s not surprising since it’s lace lol! xo
These photos are gorgeous. And I am SO impressed that you made that coat!! The only thing I ever successfully sewed myself was a tiny pillow, but I made it with my grandma so I always feel a bit sentimental every time I see it.
Stephanie
That’s high praise coming from an amazing photographer like yourself Stephanie! Thank you so much!!! It was definitely a fun project that I think about every time I wear the coat! It also makes me wish I still had time to sew because I used to have so much fun! Aww I’d love to see a photo of your pillow, I’m sure it’s beautiful! That’s such a lovely item to cherish, especially when you don’t get to see your family all the time! xo
Wow, Jen!!! I can’t believe you made this coat. It’s amazing!!!! And that lining is perfect. I wish I knew how to sew. I’m embarrassed to say I don’t know how, but I know I need to learn. This coat is seriously incredible!!!! Amazing that you can wear it after all this time! So great!! xo, Julie
It’s not too tough, I’m sure you’d learn really quickly Julie! I thought you’d like the lining, it’s purple after all
I’m seriously blushing from your sweet comments, thank you!! I’m hoping that I’ll still be able to wear it for a few more years! xo

Maya, I’m seriously blushing! Sewing really isn’t as hard as it seems, you just have to start out simple and build up to more difficult pieces…I’m more than sure you could handle it! I’m so glad to have you back – loved your adorable post today!!
